Hidden Amsterdam is an evolving collage of favorite spots as well as a glimpse of the fast-fading history of the Nazi Occupation. It reflects and probes a profound paradox. I’m swept away by Amsterdam’s beauty, architecture and engineering, egalitarianism, and cultural treasures, and I’m eager to help you explore those. At the same time, I’m haunted and confounded by the Dutch Holocaust, resistance, and lack of resistance. Anne Frank is only one of more than 100,000 murdered people from the Netherlands, and her story is just a tiny part of a much larger one.
In addition to helping you find Amsterdam’s many charms, this site guides you to places that speak of collaboration and betrayal, resistance and honor. If the words “Never Again” are to have meaning, we need to learn enough to make them live.
